Dear Friends in Christ,

The national effort for a Eucharistic Revival has been underway for over a year. At the heart of every effort is a desire to respond more fully to God’s invitation. The same God who gives us life wants to nourish us for our human journey. We live in a world filled with joys and challenges. We must respond, but the path forward is often difficult and uncertain. God does not abandon those who call out to him. He responds to give us strength as we follow the narrow way, as we carry our crosses alongside Jesus.
 
No part of human existence brings us as near to Jesus as the Eucharist. He tells us in very direct words, “Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you have no life in you.” “I am the Bread of Life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.” (John 6)
 
As powerful a promise as Jesus makes, we can easily remain indifferent. The Eucharistic Revival is meant to awaken our hearts and minds so that we receive the gift of God that gives abundant life. Every time we gather for Mass, we enter a privileged place for intimate contact with our Living God.
 
For this reason, I am asking every parish to begin a more direct preparation for the encounter with Jesus at Mass. I ask every parish to create a more intentional environment of prayer before Mass begins. The main area of the church, especially around the altar, should preserve silence before Mass. The goal of this silence is not merely a greater quiet. This silence should promote a kind of prayer that turns the heart to God in anticipation. Enter your parish church with expectation for the gifts that God gives. Bring your joys and sorrows to the altar. Take time before Mass to speak with the Lord in your heart. Pray for your intentions. Surrender your burdens. Open your heart and mind to the Word of God in the Scriptures.
 
I am also asking those who plan the liturgy and those who serve as ushers and greeters to look for ways to promote quiet prayer in the final minutes before Mass begins. While we also value the welcoming nature of our parishes, it is possible to promote both friendly interaction and intentional preparation to meet the Lord in the Eucharist. We can better use the spaces outside of the sanctuary and the time after Mass for strengthening our community.

My hope is that the Eucharistic Revival can teach us a deeper prayer, especially in the privileged location of our churches. With this initiative we are also releasing some materials to guide our prayer. Because we are easily distracted, we need help to turn our minds to God as we prepare for Mass. Please take advantage of the guidance these materials provide and develop a habit of arriving early enough to silence your heart and turn your attention to God.
 
Our encounter with the Lord in the silence of our hearts takes practice and is well worth the effort. Together, let us Seek First the Kingdom of God, joining in prayer for the many needs of our world and the conversion of our hearts.

Queridos amigos en Cristo,
 
El esfuerzo nacional por un Avivamiento Eucaristico ha estado en marcha durante mas de un afio. En el centro de cada esfuerzo esta el deseo de responder mas plenamente a la invitaci6n de Dios. El mismo Dios que nos da la vida quiere alimentarnos para nuestro camino humano. Vivimos en un mundo lleno de alegrias y desafios. Debemos responder, pero el camino a seguir es a menudo dificil e incierto. Dios no abandona a quienes lo invocan. El responde para darnos fuerza mientras seguimos el camino angosto, mientras llevamos nuestras cruces junto a Jesus.
 
Ninguna parte de la existencia humana nos acerca tanto a Jesus como la Eucaristia. Nos dice con palabras muy directas: “Les aseguro que si no comen la carne del Hijo del hombre y no beben su sangre, no tendran Vida en ustedes”; “Yo soy el pan de Vida. El que viene a mi jamas tendra hambre; el que cree en mi jamas tendra sed”. (Juan 6)
 
Por muy poderosa que sea la promesa que hace Jesus, facilmente podemos permanecer indiferentes. El Avivamiento Eucaristico tiene como objetivo despertar nuestros corazones y mentes para que recibamos el don de Dios que da vida abundante. Cada vez que nos reunimos para la Misa, entramos en un lugar privilegiado para el contacto intimo con nuestro Dios Vivo.
 
Por esta raz6n, me gustaria pedir a cada parroquia que comience una preparaci6n mas directa para el encuentro con Jesus en la Misa. Pido a cada parroquia que cree un ambiente de oraci6n mas intencional antes de que comience la Misa. El area principal de la iglesia, especialmente alrededor del altar, debe preservar el silencio antes de la Misa. El objetivo de este silencio no es simplemente un mayor tranquilidad, sino que debe promover una especie de oraci6n que dirija el coraz6n a Dios con anticipaci6n. Ingresen a su iglesia parroquial con expectativa por los clones que Dios da. Lleven sus alegrias y tristezas al altar. T6mense un tiempo antes de la Misa para hablar con el Senor en su coraz6n. Oren por sus intenciones. Entreguen sus cargas. Abran su coraz6n y mente a la Palabra de Dios en las Escrituras.
 
Tambien les pido a quienes planifican la liturgia y a quiPnPs sirven romo njieres y saludadores que busquen formas de promover la oraci6n silenciosa en los minutos finales antes de que comience la Misa. Si bien tambien valoramos la naturaleza acogedora de nuestras parroquias, es posible prornover tanto la interacci6n arnistosa corno la preparaci6n intencional para encontrarnos con el Senor en la Eucaristia.
Podernos utilizar rnejor los espacios fuera del santuario y el tiernpo despues de la Misa para fortalecer nuestra cornunidad.

Mi esperanza es que el Avivarniento Eucaristico pueda ensenarnos una oraci6n mas profunda, especialrnente en la ubicaci6n privilegiada de nuestras iglesias. Con esta iniciativa, tarnbien estarnos lanzando algunos rnateriales para guiar nuestra oraci6n. Debido a que nos distraernos facilrnente, necesitarnos ayuda para volver nuestra rnente a Dios rnientras nos prepararnos para la Misa. Aprovechen la guia que brindan estos rnateriales y desarrollen el habito de llegar lo suficienternente ternprano corno para silenciar su coraz6n y dirigir su atenci6n a Dios.

Nuestro encuentro con el Senor en el silencio de nuestro coraz6n requiere practica y bien vale la pena el esfuerzo. Juntos busquernos Prirnero el Reino de Dios, uniendonos en oraci6n por las rnuchas necesidades de nuestro rnundo y la conversion de nuestros corazones.
